European Hydrogen Safety Panel: Supporting Safe Hydrogen Deployment

The European Hydrogen Safety Panel (EHSP) supports the safe development and deployment of hydrogen technologies in Europe. It provides independent safety expertise to the Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking, advising at both project and programme levels while promoting safety knowledge and education.

The panel’s work includes reviewing project safety plans, developing practical guidance and identifying safety challenges and research needs. Its publications cover safety planning and management, hydrogen safety engineering, and regulations, codes and standards, helping project teams integrate safety into their activities.

Learning from past incidents is another important part of its work. EHSP shares analyses and recommendations based on the Hydrogen Incidents and Accidents Database (HIAD), maintained by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre. This resource supports the sharing of lessons to improve hydrogen safety practices.

The EHSP website also offers an Ask an Expert service. Users can submit questions on hydrogen production, storage, transport, refuelling, risk management and regulatory compliance, connecting them with relevant specialist expertise.
