Water Electrolysis

This presentation is aimed at upper secondary, college and vocational school students with prior knowledge of hydrogen.

This resource was developed as part of the HyAcademy.eu project.

This resource was developed to provide readers with a clear introduction to the principles, technologies, and scientific foundations of water electrolysis. Through a structured and accessible approach, the resource explains how electrolysis works, the role of electrolysers, and the chemical and electrochemical processes involved in splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen.

The material also explores the historical development of electrolysis, the evolution of electrolyzer technologies, and the main types of systems currently used, including alkaline, proton exchange membrane (PEM), and solid oxide electrolyzers. In addition, it introduces important theoretical concepts such as Faraday’s laws, cell voltage, energy efficiency, and hydrogen production calculations, helping readers connect scientific theory with practical hydrogen generation technologies.

By combining scientific explanations with sustainability perspectives, this resource highlights the importance of water electrolysis in supporting renewable hydrogen production and global decarbonization efforts. Developed as part of the HyAcademy.eu project, it aims to support learning and encourage greater understanding of how hydrogen technologies can contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
